Performance-Based Training Performance-based Training removes skills barriers to performance improvement, by focussing on real-world performance outcomes rather than arbitrarily set course objectives.
In reality, this means that you learn only what you need, to the extent
that you need it and when you need it to improve your performance. Make it as practical as possible to allow users gain first-hand experience of the IT tools that will help them perform. No-one likes to sit in a classroom and be talked at - people learn and work far better when they enjoy what they do. Real-world problems require real-world, not theoretical, solutions. The more related to their work the training, the more they will be able to apply when they get back to their desk. Too often, training courses provide lots of 'nice to have' information. PBT focuses on what users need to know to be able to perform their role at work. 'Nice to knows' can be made available through support materials. Asking 'what benefit is this training providing for the business?' is key to PBT. If the answer is 'I don't know' it is probably the wrong thing to do. Avoid 'tick box' or 'sheep dip' training and focus on what really matters. Critical to the success of any training is agreeing what the outcome of any intervention will be, together with how you will know that you have achieved it. Clear outcomes then lead to clear learning objectives. Making sure that training is outcome-driven and focussed on real-world issues, ensures that it is relevant to the attendees. Making it relevant for all is important, so finding out what each individual or group needs is the key. There is no point in carrying out training without measuring its effectiveness. There are 4 measurements that need to be taken into account:- "Did they like it?"
